Ted Kaczynski and Chris Waits moved to the mountains outside of Lincoln, Montana at about the same time in the early 1970s, and for a while both lived in primitive cabins. But while Waits began a successful career of self employment, built his home, and married, Kaczynski increasingly cut himself off from his family and the outside world. For 25 years he survived as a primitive hunter-gatherer, much like the early miners and settlers who lived in the area a hundred years before. Chris considered Ted a friend, and offered him rides to town or bicycle repairs -- plus, more importantly to Ted, unlimited access to Chris` ever-increasing land holdings in McClellan Gulch. Waits` career as a logger, miner and mechanic meant his storage areas held wiring, metal parts and explosives -- one-stop shopping for bomb components. In fact, the FBI originally investigated Waits as an accomplice. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.
